Overview

Under limited supervision, instructs students in Humanities/Philosophy classes and performs related administrative and recordkeeping duties. Interact with and assist students in various areas. Reports to the Department Chair, English, Humanities, and University Transfer.

Teaches assigned college transfer courses in humanities/philosophy — both online and traditional. Performs related administrative and recordkeeping duties. Remains active in professional organizations and activities. Performs various student-related duties.

Teaches assigned day, evening, and online courses in college transfer humanities/philosophy. Primary responsibility is teaching philosophy but may be asked to teach other humanities courses. Use technology to enhance instruction.

Keeps abreast of newest research and technological advances relative to the teaching of humanities/philosophy courses including online instruction by reading professional journals or attending seminars, conferences, meetings, etc.

Maintains good working relationships and communicates information within the Department and with all departments/divisions on campus.

Responds to phone calls and e-mail promptly, providing information and answering inquiries as appropriate. Performs other duties as required.

Master s degree in philosophy/humanities, or MA in related field plus 18 graduate hours in philosophy/humanities or a related field and two years of teaching experience in teaching humanities/philosophy; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Prefer both graduate and undergraduate degrees in humanities/philosophy. Preference given to applicants with community college teaching experience and online teaching experience.

Physical and Other Requirements
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of office and audio-visual equipment including computer, copier, calculator, and other equipment. Must be able to lift and carry up to about thirty pounds. Physical demands may exceed sedentary work; position requires standing, walking, stooping, reaching, and other movements for extended periods.
  • Data conception: ability to compare and judge data, people, or things by observable characteristics.
  • Interpersonal communication: ability to speak and convey information and give instructions to students and others, including communication with supervisor.
  • Language ability: ability to read, prepare documents and reports, communicate effectively in speaking and writing, and understand applicable manuals and catalogs.
  • Intelligence, verbal and numerical aptitude, form/spatial aptitude, motor coordination, manual dexterity, color discrimination, interpersonal temperament, physical communication as applicable to job duties.
