Position: Court Reporting Instructor, Part-Time (Continuing Education)

Overview

The Court Reporting Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in all aspects of court reporting in accordance with approved curriculum and instructional standards. This position delivers classroom and/or laboratory-based instruction, supervises students in learning and testing environments, and evaluates student performance to support skill development and program completion. The instructor maintains required professional certifications, remains current with court reporting practices and regulations, and contributes to curriculum review and continuous improvement efforts.

This is a part-time, as-needed position that supports workforce readiness, credential attainment, and student success through effective teaching, assessment, and academic administration.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain all required certifications and credentials for the position and remain current with applicable court reporting rules, regulations, and professional practices.
  • Prepare, teach, and deliver assigned courses in accordance with approved course syllabi and instructional standards.
  • Develop, review, and update course syllabi and instructional materials on a regular basis; recommend and assist with curriculum revisions as appropriate.
  • Create and maintain an effective learning environment that supports diverse learning styles and utilizes appropriate teaching methods.
  • Supervise students in classroom and testing environments to ensure a safe, productive, and respectful learning atmosphere.
  • Administer and supervise examinations; grade assessments; record and maintain accurate student performance data; and utilize formative and summative assessment techniques to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Receive, review, process, file, and submit required academic and administrative documentation, including attendance records, grade sheets, registration materials, payroll documentation, and other related reports.
  • Maintain accurate registration, attendance, and payroll records for all courses taught.
  • Identify and report instructional material, equipment, and operating supply needs to the CE Business & Workforce Licensure Director.
  • Assist in maintaining classroom environments that emphasize safety, good housekeeping, and equipment security.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, instructor, and staff information in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); consistently monitor work areas to ensure data protection.

Minimum Qualifications

Certified Verbatim Reporter certification or other nationally recognized court reporting credential

Preferred Qualifications

Instructional experience with adult learners preferred

Work Environment

Primarily classroom setting; requires regular interaction with students, staff, and administrators in an educational environment; instructional spaces may include traditional classrooms, computer-based labs, and testing environments; work environment is generally quiet to moderate in noise level and emphasizes professionalism, safety, confidentiality, and compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical requirements may include:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking during instructional and testing activities.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, stenographic equipment, keyboards, and other instructional technology.
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively with students in classroom and testing environments.
  • Ability to lift, move, or reposition instructional materials, equipment, or supplies weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail while supervising students, administering examinations, and reviewing instructional materials and records.
Normal Working Hours

This is a part-time, as-needed position. Work hours are determined by course scheduling and instructional needs and may vary by semester. Assignments may include day, evening, or weekend classes, as well as occasional additional hours for course preparation, grading, student supervision, and required meetings or training. The schedule is not guaranteed and is subject to change based on enrollment, program needs, and institutional priorities.
