C. Smith University seeks an innovative, collaborative librarian to serve in the role of Digital Initiatives and Resources Librarian at Johnson
C. Smith University, a private Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Charlotte, NC. This position supports the discovery of and access to the James
B. Duke Memorial Library’s digital content, including websites, electronic databases, e-books, off-campus learning tools, and social media. The Digital Initiatives and Resources Librarian will explore collaborations with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners to lead innovative digital initiatives that support the university and the library’s mission to improve undergraduate research and career readiness. The candidate will also work closely with University Archives and Circulation to assist with creating and managing metadata for the library’s Digital Smith online archives and the OCLC library management system.
The Digital Initiatives and Resources Librarian will advocate for funding, training, and promotion of digital projects and library technology, and will oversee data protection and security for library resources and initiatives. The successful candidate will also contribute to campus discussions about information literacy, faculty and research services, and innovative online scholarship in a modern library environment.
- Manage, innovate, assess, and troubleshoot library websites including the main site and Digital Smith, as well as the proxy server for off-campus library resources
- Monitor digital library content for data protection and develop, evaluate, and implement digital usage and security policies and standards for the library
- Manage, analyze, and curate library’s electronic databases, e-books, and e-journals collections
- Spearhead library management of and innovations for off-campus and virtual instruction and provision of library resources
- Participate in project planning for digital projects and initiatives
- Manage library’s social media, blogs, shared accounts and drives, and the marketing and promotion of library events and resources
- Assist in the design and creation of learning modules and online instruction for library resources
- Contribute to the production and management of descriptive metadata for physical and born-digital collections
- Propose budgets and explore grant opportunities for funding and innovating library technology, data protection, and software
- Work closely with the University Archivist on the management of digital collections and repositories
- Work closely with Collection Development Librarian on managing OCLC and other library management software
- Train, supervise, and evaluate staff members on digital collections, projects, and special initiatives
- Work with library staff and IT department to develop and evaluate new digital tools for teaching and learning and assisting users in their application. Encourage and support use of digital research resources, tools and solutions as they relate to library programs and collections
- Network, collaborate and actively participate in local, regional, and national organizations focusing on resource management, digital initiatives, and technology
- Serve on committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or equivalent
- Experience managing websites and digital content, and with data protection and security
- Interest in and aptitude for learning new technologies, best practices, and emerging library trends in digital initiatives
- Aptitude with using library databases, software, and resources in a physical and remote setting
- Self-motivation, project management skills, and the ability to multi-task with various deadlines
- Strong commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with remote learning tools like Canvas, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
