Library Associate - Children's Services - Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – University City Regional Branch

Hiring Range: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour. This is a non‑exempt (hourly) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity, including an assessment of the applicant’s salary history and qualifications relative to the market rate and job requirements.
The Children's Library Associate at University City Regional works within a team of Children’s Services staff to create a welcoming and engaging environment for children ages 0‑11, their caregivers, and families. The Associate leads age‑appropriate programs—such as early literacy story times and school‑age programs—creates book displays and reader advisory services, represents the Library in the community, and facilitates outreach to area preschools, schools, and partners.
The Associate also participates in systemwide teams and collaborates with staff in Children’s Services.
The University City Regional Library serves the University City area of Charlotte, one of the fastest‑growing business, health care, and academic regions in the county. The 38,000‑sq‑ft library branch, opened in 2025, is located near light‑rail transit and offers unique choices for living, shopping, and leisure, serving a rapidly growing and diverse community.
ScheduleFull Time – 40 hours per week, Benefit Eligible
M‑F 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Works one evening per week 11:00 am – 8:00 pm
Rotating weekends

Perform professional and technical library work in Children’s Services. Deliver a high level of quality library services, ensuring the provision of value‑added experiences for all customers.
Essential Functions- Strong programming and outreach experience is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to build and maintain community partnerships, and to develop positive relationships with families, library users, staff, and partners.
- Create and deliver programs to age‑appropriate audiences.
- Prepare program reports.
- Provide research assistance to customers.
- Utilize integrated library systems software.
- Provide service desk coverage and assist customers at several service points.
- Train and assist customers on library policies, procedures, and processes.
- Maintain the library’s collection of materials, including repairs, shelving, and marketing.
- Assist with volunteer management.
- Promote and market library programs; collaborate with Marketing and Communication to generate flyers and materials.
- Design and provide developmentally appropriate programs for youth from birth to 11 years of age.
- Create and maintain attractive and appropriate bulletin boards and displays.
- Experience:
Minimum of two years in library, retail, computer, or customer service. - Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent. - Combination of relevant education and experience accepted.
- Spanish speaking.
- Experience working with children in an educational or library setting.
- Knowledge of developmental stages of children.
- Knowledge of integrated library systems software (e.g., Polaris).
- At least three years of library experience.
- Knowledge of alphanumeric sorting systems, various library systems, telephone etiquette, and children’s literature and developmental stages.
- Technology adeptness.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Excellent time‑management skills with attention to detail.
- Adaptability; maintaining effectiveness during major changes.
- Communication; conveying information clearly to individuals or groups.
- Collaboration; working effectively with others and establishing good working relationships.
- Technical/professional knowledge and skills; staying current on developments and trends.
- Work standards; setting high standards of performance and assuming responsibility.
Proficient in various computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
