Lecturer of Art Education

Position Number: 001365

Employment Type: Permanent – Full‑Time

Primary Purpose of Department: The Department of Art & Art History empowers students to expand their vision through study and practice in Art, Design, Art History, and Art Education. We foster innovative studio practices, scholarship, and arts‑based teaching. The department offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, a Bachelor of Arts in Art, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art (seven concentrations including Art Education).

Students also pursue a minor in Art History and an Honors Program in Art History.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in art education, including both online and face‑to‑face instruction.
  • Maintain a 4/4 teaching load and serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Supervise and observe student‑teacher internship candidates.
  • Develop and deliver courses such as Integrating Art Across the Curriculum, Elementary or Secondary Methods, and Artists as Teachers.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in studio concentrations, the Art History program, the University Galleries, and the College of Education.
Minimum Required Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in art education or a related field.
  • Professional work experience in K‑12 classrooms.
  • Current North Carolina K‑12 teaching license in Art (or license in another state, or eligible to obtain one in NC).
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology and digital media to support teaching.
  • Critical competence in visual art studio practice.
  • Experience mentoring art teachers through observation, feedback, and coaching.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution in the teaching discipline.
  • Three years of successful visual arts teaching in K‑12 settings.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
  • Command of pedagogical practices in art and design teaching for children and youth.
  • Experience with practicum and clinical teaching supervision.
  • Familiarity with state standards governing teacher education programs and licensure.
  • Supportive work with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to maintain a professional learning community.
  • Knowledge of edTPA, CPAST, contemporary art, art history, and contemporary educational issues.
  • Understanding of classroom teaching as both practice and research.
