General Definition of Work

The elementary school teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. The employee carries out school‑based work to implement Board of Education policies under the principal’s direction.

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools. The district reserves the right to require work at other location(s) as reasonably required.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
  • Assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct. Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure. Maintain order in the classroom fairly and justly.
  • Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods.
  • Create a classroom environment that provides for student engagement and enables achievement of learning objectives.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicating these objectives to students.
  • Establish learning objectives based on student needs, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requirements, the Standard Course of Study, and district curriculum framework.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Diagnose student learning challenges regularly, seeking assistance from central office staff as required. Maintain accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans.
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities, providing a variety of materials for exploration, manipulation, and imaginative play.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges.
  • Use appropriate techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.
  • Assign and grade classwork and homework.
  • Act as a test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program, fulfilling requirements as designated in the North Carolina School Test Coordinator’s Handbook, the Proctor’s Guide for the North Carolina Testing Program, and the North Carolina State Board of Education Policy GCS‑A‑010.
  • Observe and assess students’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs regularly.
  • Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, priorities, and resource needs, encouraging parent involvement. Confer with counselors and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic challenges.
  • Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation.
  • Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.
  • Participate in professional development focused on acquiring and improving skills and knowledge.
  • Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment. Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
