The Charlotte Lab School Exceptional Children’s Lab Contained Teacher will have responsibilities in a self-contained classroom, primarily with students who identify on the autism spectrum, in support of Lab’s instructional vision:
- Create and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Maintain Individualized Education Plans in conjunction with state and federal requirements
- Hold annual meetings with families to provide progress updates
- Complete progress reports quarterly based on specific student goals
- Comply with timelines and regulations as outlined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Obtain and maintain compliant special education files
- Deliver specialized instruction to students on his/her caseload
- Develop lesson plans based on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Deliver student instruction in modalities instituted by the school and assigned program in both pull‑out and inclusion settings that is data-driven
- Facilitate interdisciplinary instruction of challenge-based curriculum aligned with Lab’s “Quest” model
- Use flexible grouping and scheduling
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and support staff
- Provide assistance in developing and adapting curriculum materials to meet the needs of student and teachers
- Maintain communication with related service providers and case managers to ensure compliance with the provision of services, evaluations and progress reports
- Participate in weekly team meetings
- Analyze data and reports to guide goal setting and instructional planning
- Monitor student progress through a variety of tools and portfolios
- Provide necessary supports to aid instruction in the general education setting
- Proctor standardized tests
- Communicate frequently and regularly with families of students, for both academic and behavior-related reasons, both positive and when needing assistance
- Participate actively in Lab’s community activities, in support of Lab’s instructional, community-building, fundraising, family recruitment, and hiring efforts
- Participate actively in ongoing professional development and teacher evaluation process
- Supervise students and maintain a clean, orderly, safe, print‑rich and positive classroom learning environment
- Take on other responsibilities as needed, and as assigned, to ensure student and school success
The Charlotte Lab School Lower School Teacher will also have responsibilities in support of Lab’s vision for students’ social‑emotional learning:
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students; in this role:
- Deliver a social‑emotional skills curriculum
- Develop deep relationships with students in your advisory
- Develop and implement activities to build community within the advisory
- Serve as an advocate for advisees, for both academic and disciplinary reasons
- Provide regular updates and communication with advisees’ families
- Guide advisees in the preparation of their Student‑Led Conferences each trimester
- Operate as liaison between advisees’ families and the school
Candidate MUST:
- Be able/willing to learn how to fulfill the responsibilities listed above
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year institution
- Demonstrate experience in, or passion for, teaching diverse populations
- Be fully licensed or willing to obtain North Carolina K‑5, 6‑8 and/or 9‑12 teacher licensure
In addition, the Lab School Leadership Team will look favorably upon candidates who:
TEACHER PREPARATION- Have at least 2 years of full‑time teaching experience
- Have experience teaching relevant Elementary School Content Area
- Have an advanced degree in a related field
- Have comfort with technology and experience with Google Suite
- Possess strong classroom management skills
- Are exceptionally organized and have ability to prioritize effectively and meet competing deadlines
- Have experience with standards‑based grading
- Have dual‑certification to teach Elementary School students and:
- Exceptional Children
- Academically Gifted students
- English as a Second Language
