Job Description
The SALT Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting state and local tax (SALT) compliance activities for a multi-jurisdictional telecommunications organization. This role ensures accurate, timely, and well-documented compliance with sales/use, franchise, regulatory, and property tax requirements while supporting audit readiness, nexus management, and coordination with external tax consultants as the business continues to expand.
SALT Accountant (State & Local Tax)
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES- Track, validate, and maintain vendor exemption certificates to prevent inaccurate tax charges on monthly vendor invoices.
- Partner with the Billing team to collect, review, and retain customer tax-exempt and reseller exemption certificates to ensure accurate customer billing.
- Prepare and provide required reporting and support schedules to external consultants responsible for filing state and local tax returns, excluding income tax, across all applicable jurisdictions.
- Provide OPSTATS detail to external consultants and review prepared USAC Form 499 for completeness and accuracy.
- Reconcile tax liability general ledger accounts on a monthly basis to ensure accuracy and support month-end close activities.
- Assist with nexus studies, state registrations, and ongoing compliance requirements resulting from new products, expanded network footprint, and increased third-party fiber activity.
- Maintain tax calendars and ensure compliance with all state and local filing deadlines.
- Support responses to state and local tax audits, notices, and information requests, including gathering and organizing supporting documentation.
- Monitor jurisdictional tax rate changes and ensure timely updates within the ERP system for accurate use tax calculations.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Billing, Revenue, AP, and external advisors to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions.
- Assist with day-to-day, monthly, and year-end accounting operations and other ad hoc accounting or tax projects as assigned.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a multi-state, compliance-driven environment.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with external consultants and internal stakeholders.
- Highly motivated, self-directed, and collaborative team player.
- Professional demeanor with a strong internal customer service mindset.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required.
- 2+ years of accounting or tax-related experience preferred; exposure to state and local tax compliance strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting multi-jurisdictional or multi-entity organizations preferred.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working within an ERP system required.
- Telecommunications or regulated industry experience a plus.
