The Corporate Controller will serve as the senior leader responsible for enterprise-wide accounting, controllership, and financial integrity across Crete United’s growing network of MEP contracting companies. This role will oversee corporate and regional accounting leadership, support a centralized shared services model, and drive consistent, best-in-class accounting practices across more than 40 operating companies in 18 states. In addition to technical accounting leadership, the Corporate Controller will play a critical role in developing and elevating accounting talent at the acquired-company (field) level, ensuring local controllers and accounting managers are well-trained in construction and project-based accounting, aligned with Crete United standards, and positioned as strong business partners to operations.
Key Responsibilities Enterprise Accounting Leadership- Lead all corporate accounting functions, including general ledger, financial reporting, internal controls, and month-end close across a multi-entity, multi-state organization.
- Ensure consistent application of GAAP, including percentage-of-completion accounting, job cost accounting, and revenue recognition under ASC 606 for long-term construction and service contracts.
- Partner with Operations leadership to standardize policies related to WIP schedules, under/over billings, retainage, change orders, claims, and project margin recognition.
- Drive continuous improvement, automation, and efficiency across accounting processes.
- Establish and enforce best practices for project-based accounting across all lines of business.
- Partner closely with operations, project managers, and executive leadership to ensure accurate project financials, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Review and analyze project margins, backlog reporting, and contract profitability trends across operating companies.
- Build scalable training programs, playbooks, and tools to improve accounting consistency, technical competence, and leadership capability across the field.
- Serve as a mentor and resource to local accounting teams, helping elevate them from transactional accounting to proactive financial leadership.
- Partner with the Crete MIS team on accounting integration for newly acquired companies, including systems migration, policy alignment, and close process stabilization.
- Support FP&A, IT, and operations to implement standardized systems and reporting across the platform.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal policies, lender requirements, and regulatory obligations.
- Support external audits, tax compliance, and lender reporting.
- Develop and maintain a strong internal control environment appropriate for a growing, acquisitive organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including senior leadership roles in construction, MEP, HVAC, or electrical contracting environments.
- Deep hands-on expertise in percentage-of-completion accounting, job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and project-based financial management.
- Proven experience leading accounting teams across multiple entities, regions, or operating companies.
- Demonstrated success integrating acquired businesses and standardizing accounting processes.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills with a passion for developing talent.
- Ability to partner effectively with operations and executive leadership.
- Private equity experience preferred.
