Shelter Harbor Golf Club is a Hurdzan-Fry design that features an 18-hole, par-71 championship course, a 9-hole par-3 course and a 20 acre practice facility. The course is spread out over 400+ acres of rugged, rocky terrain. The grass varieties at SHGC include: greens are Greenwich Velvet bentgrass on straight sand, bentgrass tees and fairways, fine fescue/bluegrass rough and fescue/bluestem native areas.
2nd Assistant's will be involved in all aspects of maintaining the golf course to the highest level. Particular areas of focus will be small crew management, plant protect ant and fertilizer calibration and application, hand-watering, course set up, etc. SHGC will be replacing a new John Deere fleet of equipment in 2026, also a fleet of 52 Husquavarna robotic mowers, 3 John Deere GPS sprayers and a DJI T100 drone sprayer.
Also a new Rainbird Irrigation system is slated for spring of 2027 with a new pumphouse set for completion April of 2026.
This is a full-time on-site role for a 2nd Assistant Superintendent located in Charlestown, RI. The 2nd Assistant Superintendent will assist in the daily management of golf course maintenance operations, including turf management, irrigation system maintenance, equipment operation, and staff supervision. Responsibilities include coordinating with the superintendent and other team members to ensure the golf course is maintained to the highest standards, monitoring and addressing course conditions, and ensuring proper use and maintenance of equipment and tools.
The role will also include participation in training programs and maintaining safety protocols.
- Strong knowledge of turf management practices, irrigation systems, and pest control methods
- Experience in equipment operation and maintenance, as well as familiarity with golf course maintenance tools
- Skills in staff supervision, team collaboration, and organizational planning
- Understanding of golf course standards and the ability to ensure a high-quality playing environment for members and guests
- Degree or certification in turf management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred
- Pesticide applicator license or the ability to obtain one within 3 months
- Strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and effective communication
- Previous experience in golf course maintenance is highly beneficial
