Surgical Tech, Medical Assistant
Surgical Technician - Thomas Orthopedic Hospital at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals. This role assists with nursing care and surgical services under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and physician/surgeon.
Responsibilities- Sets up for scheduled cases with needed supplies and instrumentation.
- Assists in safe transport of the patient to the operating room and proper positioning on the OR table.
- Adheres to national patient safety goals by confirming the surgical site and procedure to be performed.
- Follows steps of surgical scrubbing, proper donning of sterile gloves and gown; gowning and gloving surgeons and other personnel.
- Assists in accounting for instruments, sharps, sponges, and other soft goods used during surgical procedures.
- Identifies, prepares and correctly passes surgical instruments and sharps to and from the surgeon.
- Assists in cleanup of the operating room: transport of instruments, disposal of trash and linens, restocking supplies.
- Assists the surgeon/physician with endoscopic procedures: proper patient positioning, gloving, cleaning/disinfecting of endoscopes, and use of PPE.
- Assists in decontamination of surgical instrumentation.
- Monitors the function of the autoclave for sterilization of instrumentation.
- Safeguards patient privacy and maintains confidentiality.
- Stocks the operating room.
- Assists the RN/Physician as needed or directed.
For hires prior to 5/1/2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 30 days of hire.
For hires on or after 5/1/2024:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 30 days of hire.
- Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse OR completion of internal WVUM Surg Tech Trainee program with at least 6 months in job OR completion of externally accredited Surgical Technology program OR completion of a Registered Nurse program OR two (2) years of previous scrub experience.
- Three (3) years prior scrub experience (preferred).
- For Facilities With Specialty Accreditation Requirements:
Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
- Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts up to 200 lbs.
- Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
- Ability to wear lead for extended periods of time.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases.
- Ability to follow strict sterile technique.
- Ability to set up operating room with instruments and supplies for scheduled cases and pass to and from surgeon during procedures.
- Knowledge of and adherence to strict aseptic and sterile techniques.
