The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking a candidate who will primarily examine and audit tax returns and other related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with WV law. The incumbent will show moderate knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements.
Responsibilities- Verify the accuracy of return filings utilizing well-established rules and procedures.
- Correspond with taxpayers and their representatives in writing or on the phone regarding issues and questions related to tax filings.
- Communicate with auditors, attorneys, and other agency employees regarding issues related to tax filings.
- Engage in tax discovery and desk audit programs leading to assessment of tax or denial of refunds.
- Utilize the integrated tax system and other office computer applications to accomplish everyday tasks.
- Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to taxpayer information.
- Perform related work as required.
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree; the qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
- OR two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division or two (2) years of experience providing accounting support and/or clerical office support may be substituted for the required training.
- Two (2) years of full‑time or equivalent paid part‑time experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support, OR two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division.
