Backend Engineer

Location: Charleston, SC - 997 Morrison Drive, Charleston, SC 29403

Work Environment: 5 days in office

We build customer facing products and internal tools to support our business, including:

• A container tracking engine, which collects, standardizes, and enriches container shipment tracking information from hundreds of sources across the supply chain. Implemented with containerized cloud hosted Python code, utilizing distributed task processing and deployed using Infrastructure as Code. Backed by a MySQL database.
• An API serving millions of requests per day, used internally and by customers to provide, update, and retrieve shipment data. Containerized FastAPI web server running on AWS.
• Pulumi components and Python packages used by another internal team to write and deploy hundreds of customer specific data ingestion, cleaning, and transformation scripts.
• A container payment portal which calculates demurrage fees, accepts customer payments, and sends hold and release information to terminals for tens of thousands of containers on behalf of some of the largest ocean carriers in the world. Implemented with containerized cloud hosted Python code, deployed using Infrastructure as Code.

We’re looking for professional experience with these software engineering concepts. Bonus points for familiarity with our specific tools.

• Owns and drives individual projects to completion.
• Collaborates with other team members to understand problems and workshop and implement solutions.
• Handles bugs and escalates major problems to key project owners across all of our backend systems, including our databases, SQL Alchemy entities, Python packages, tracking engine, API, Pulumi components, and CI/CD pipelines.
• A solid grasp of the logistics industry’s business logic, capable of communicating with other Gnosis teams to understand and solve business problems.
• Explores new tools and ideas and raises them to the team.
• Follows team standards on coding styles and pattern standards.
• Helps to address technical debt on outdated or deprecated tools and patterns whenever encountered.
