Utilities Hillman

A Pipe Hillman is an entry-level construction crew member who works on underground utility installation — especially water, sewer, and storm drainage piping. This role supports skilled crew members like Pipe Layers and Foremen to safely and efficiently install pipeline infrastructure on construction sites.

• Assist the crew with layout, setup, and installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, storm drainage).
• Prepare pipe materials — measure, bevel, handle, and position pipes and fittings.
• Help set and check grade and alignment using lasers, levels, and grade rods.
• Maintain proper trench depth, alignment, and slope according to plans.
• Signal and guide equipment operators during trenching, pipe placement, and back-filling.
• Keep trench and work zone clean and organized; manage material flow.
• Assist with backfill, compaction, and final grading operations.
• Adhere to safety protocols and ensure crew safety (OSHA trenching standards).
• Communicate with the Pipe Foreman to meet daily production goals.

• Some experience on underground utility crews preferred
• Ability to read grade stakes and work with basic leveling tools.
• Comfortable working in trenches and around heavy equipment.
• Physical fitness: ability to lift 50+ lbs, work outdoors in various weather.
• Reliable transportation to/from job sites.
• Safety-minded attitude and teamwork skills.

• Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
• Work involves sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions
• Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of five to fifty pounds. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, safety glasses, hard hat with chin strap, reflective safety vest, gloves, ear protection, face shield, safety toe boots

• Hand tools (shovels, levels, pipe tools) and basic power tools.
• Laser grade equipment or level rods.
• Assistance with trench boxes and shoring as part of safe excavation.
