Position Summary
This position is accountable for operating machinery to move construction materials, dirt, and other heavy loads as well as operating gasoline and diesel-powered equipment that clears grades and prepares the job site. This includes operating excavation and loading machines equipped with scoops, shovels, and buckets that dig sand, gravel, dirt, and similar materials as well as operating bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, and similar equipment.
The incumbent must have the ability and flexibility to work different shifts and long hours (8‑12 hours). Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production needs and at the discretion of the crew supervisor. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly built on Integrity.
Responsibilities
- Fastens attachments, graders, buckets, and rollers to the tractor with hitch‑pins.
- Operates earth‑moving equipment.
- Performs inspections of the equipment prior to and at the end of daily operations.
- Greases all appropriate parts as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Maintains the equipment as per manufacturer guidelines.
- Checks that equipment functions properly.
- Cleans, maintains, and performs basic repairs to equipment.
- Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisors promptly.
- Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long‑lasting use.
- Maintains confidentiality of company proprietary information.
- Responsible for the incumbent's safety.
- Responsible for safety of all co‑workers.
- Authorized and obligated to stop work on any unsafe condition.
- Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies; subject to disciplinary action for non‑compliance.
- Reports violations of applicable laws and company policies promptly.
- Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervision (e.g., safety training).
- Minimum three years of experience operating earth‑moving equipment.
- Understanding of construction principles and procedures.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to work in constantly changing weather and site conditions.
- Ability to lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach as required.
The incumbent must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable workplace accommodation and properly use PPE such as hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, earplugs, steel‑toed shoes, or other protective equipment. The incumbent must identify critical issues, formulate action plans with all levels of management, remain calm during emergencies, and respond appropriately as directed by Safety Representative or other management personnel.
The incumbent must also be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner when an emergency arises.
