Job Description
Public Safety Officer (PSO) patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law. This role performs journey‑level duties or entry‑level special agent duties. May be considered a Master Public Safety Officer with greater than 6 months experience in law enforcement. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Issues warnings and citations to violators. Apprehends and arrests violators.
Investigates alleged or suspected violations of criminal law. Conducts surveillances and performs undercover assignments. Develops and uses informants to obtain information. Conducts background or other administrative investigations. Interviews witnesses and suspects. Maintains order during emergencies, participating in manhunts and providing executive protection. Testifies in court and other legal proceedings; prosecutes defendants in magistrate's court. Keeps records and makes reports regarding activities.
Plans, directs and coordinates law enforcement activities within the designated area of responsibility. Executes orders from superiors. Explains orders, messages and decisions to subordinates; advises subordinates of changes in laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Provides guidance and on‑the‑job training to other law enforcement personnel. Monitors patrol activities and recommends changes to improve effectiveness. Supervises and evaluates law enforcement personnel.

Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma. Certification by the Department of Public Safety, in accordance with Section 23‑6‑430 of the 1976 South Carolina Code of Laws. Some positions require a commercial driver’s license.
Public Safety Officer: A high school diploma. Certification by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council, in accordance with State Law (23‑23‑40) is required. Must pass a background check. Some positions require a commercial driver’s license.
7353 Master Public Safety Officer: A high school diploma and six months experience in law enforcement. Certification by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council, in accordance with State Law (23‑23‑40) is required. Must pass a background check. Some positions require a commercial driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time. Continuous. Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted. Infrequent. Ability to lift, drag, pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs, assisted. Infrequent. Ability to hear and recognize various alarms, verbal summons and other sounds within noisy background areas. Continuous. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected. Continuous.
Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any building within the institutions. Infrequent. Olfactory sense must be intact in order to smell unusual odors. Continuous. Ability to carry heavy objects, i.e. persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations. Infrequent. Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders. Infrequent.
