Position Summary
As a Naturalist, you will serve as an in‑house expert, leading ecological focused tours by van, foot, motor boat, kayak, paddle board, and bike. You will also work in our Nature Center, guiding guests through native species such as amphibians, reptiles, and marsupials. The ideal candidate is available from May through August, with flexible timing discussed during the interview process.
Pay RateThe actual rate of pay will be determined during the hiring process.
Qualifications- A college degree or currently seeking in biology or a related science/wildlife discipline.
- CPR and First Aid certification (current) preferred.
- Nature guide/eco‑tourism experience preferred.
- Animal care experience preferred.
- Passion for the outdoors and the ability to convey information to guests of all ages and backgrounds, including young children.
- Strong oral communication skills and the ability to talk to large groups.
- Interpretive skills relating to plants and wildlife.
- Willingness to learn wildlife or plant identification as needed.
- Ability to handle confidential information and work well in a team environment.
- Flexible schedule, including weekend work and possible holidays (Memorial Day and July 4th).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Pass a background check and hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Identify vegetation and wildlife native to Kiawah Island, educating guests on their importance within barrier island ecosystems.
- Deliver oral interpretation of biological processes occurring on a barrier island.
- Lead safe and enjoyable tours on kayaking, stand‑up paddle boarding, van trips, biking tours, interpretive walks, or in a classroom setting.
- Answer all questions and promote the activities and events of the Nature Program and Recreation Department with excellent customer service.
- Assist in the day‑to‑day care of animals inside the nature center and, when necessary, aid in animal rescues or possible rehabilitation.
- Communicate well with management, co‑workers, and guests, upholding the resort’s core values and policies.
- Assist as directed in the "Swim Across America" open water swim event and conduct all other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Carry up to 80 pounds across short‑to‑medium distances.
- Stand for the majority of the shift while reaching, bending, and stooping frequently.
- Walk up to 2 miles continuously, engaging with guests.
- Endure extreme heat and humidity while walking, biking, and kayaking.
- Drive a small 12‑person passenger bus and work on premises daily.
- Work in all‑weather elements and heights.
- Possess personal transportation to commute to the job site.
