Position: Naturalist - Full Time

Overview

Position:
Naturalist. You will be an in-house expert, leading ecological focused tours by van, foot, motor boat, kayak, paddle board, and bike. You will also work in our Nature Center with native species (amphibians, reptiles, and marsupials). This position is suitable for wildlife professionals with Low-Country ecological knowledge and outdoor recreation experience.

Responsibilities
  • Lead ecological tours by van, foot, motor boat, kayak, paddle board, and bike.
  • Work in the Nature Center with native species and assist in daily animal care.
  • Deliver oral interpretation of biological processes on a barrier island.
  • Answer questions and promote Nature Program and Recreation Department activities with high customer service standards.
  • Assist in day-to-day care of animals and in animal rescues including possible rehabilitation when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with management, co-workers, and guests; uphold resort policies and core values.
  • Assist as directed in events such as Swim Across America; perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A college degree (or pursuing) in biology or a related science/wildlife discipline.
  • CPR and First Aid (current) certification preferred.
  • Nature guide/eco-tourism experience preferred.
  • Animal care experience preferred.
  • Passion for the outdoors; ability to convey information to guests of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Strong oral communication skills; ability to speak to large groups.
  • Strong interpretive skills related to plants and wildlife.
  • Willingness to learn plant and wildlife identification as needed.
  • Ability to handle confidential information; work with minimal supervision and within a team.
  • Ability to anticipate guests and co-workers’ needs.
  • Flexible schedule including weekend work and possibly holidays; varying tours (Tuesday–Saturday).
  • Good to excellent English communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Must pass a background check and have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Essential

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to carry up to 80 pounds across short to medium distances.
  • Stand for a majority of the shift; able to reach, bend, and stoop frequently.
  • Walk up to 2 miles continuously while engaging with guests.
  • Physically able to perform duties outdoors in heat and humidity; walk, bike, and kayak as part of the job.
  • Must be able to drive a small 12-person passenger bus.
  • Must be able to work on-site during daily job requirements.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work in all-weather elements and at heights.
