Overview
Job Description Summary The Preoperative Assessment Clinic within Perioperative Services supports patients scheduled for surgical and procedural care across multiple MUSC Health locations. The clinic plays a critical role in early risk identification, surgical readiness, and prevention of day-of-surgery delays and cancellations.
Responsibilities- The RN II functions as an experienced clinical reviewer responsible for comprehensive preoperative chart review, risk stratification, and coordination of next steps for patients with complex medical histories. This role applies independent nursing judgment within established protocols to determine appropriate preoperative pathways, escalate concerns, and collaborate with surgical, anesthesia, and specialty teams to ensure patient safety and readiness for surgery.

Monday-Friday. No nights, weekends, or holidays.
Under the direction of clinic leadership, the RN II performs in-depth preoperative chart review and clinical assessment using the electronic medical record. This role evaluates patient risk factors, identifies gaps in preoperative readiness, initiates appropriate follow-up actions, and communicates with interdisciplinary teams to support safe and efficient surgical care. The RN II role is designed to manage higher-acuity, higher-complexity patients and to serve as a clinical escalation point within preoperative workflows.
MinimumTraining and Education
Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.
RequiredLicensure, Certifications, Registrations
Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical and Mental RequirementsAbility to perform job functions while standing (continuous), sitting (continuous), and walking (continuous). Ability to climb stairs (infrequent); work indoors/outdoors; work from elevated areas; work in confined/cramped spaces; kneeling; bend at the waist; twist at the waist; squat and perform job functions; perform pinching, fine and gross motor movements; reach overhead and perform repetitive motions; lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted (infrequent) and lift/lower objects from floor to 36 inches (infrequent);
reach in all directions; maintain 20/40 vision with correction; maintain hearing acuity; and work rotating shifts and overtime as required. Also ability to work in a latex-safe environment and to be physically qualified for respirator use where required.
