Job Description Summary

9 ACU is a 26 bed Pediatric medical surgical unit providing care for children 0-18 years with some adult patients up to age 25. The average daily census is 24 with a blend of medical and surgical diagnoses. Common patient populations include general surgery, neurosurgery, urology surgery, orthopedic surgery, endocrinology, and nephrology. 9 ACU is also the epilepsy monitoring unit at SJCH, caring for patients with seizure disorders.

The unit is composed of all private rooms. The staffing mix includes registered nurses, patient care technicians, and unit secretaries.

Responsibilities

Provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Directs and leads other assigned team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice. Provides patient/family centered care using the nursing process and focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs.

Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior. Demonstrates the ability to function in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model, shared governance, peer review, and professional development. Coordinates the effective and efficient delivery of patient care services through the application of care management principles, identifying clinical priorities and initiating actions to improve patient outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimum Training and

Education:

Bachelor of Nursing degree required. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required. Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:
Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical/Functional Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing continuously, sitting continuously, walking continuously, climbing stairs infrequently, working indoors continuously, working outside in temperature extremes infrequently, working from elevated areas frequently, working in confined/cramped spaces frequently, performing job functions from kneeling positions infrequently, bending at the waist continuously, twisting at the waist frequently, squatting and performing job functions frequently, performing pinching operations frequently, performing gross motor activities with fingers and hands continuously, performing firm grasping continuously, performing fine manipulation continuously, reaching overhead frequently, performing repetitive motions continuously, using both legs continuously, using lower extremities for balance and coordination continuously, reaching in all directions continuously, lifting and carrying 50 lbs unassisted infrequently, lifting/lowering objects 50 lbs from floor 36″ unassisted infrequently, lifting from 36″ to overhead 25 lbs infrequently, exerting up to 50 lbs of force frequently.

Vision and hearing requirements: maintain 20/40 corrected vision in one eye or both eyes continuously; maintain hearing acuity with correction continuously.
