Overview
Associate Attorney role at Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms LLC. Litigation attorney specialized in representing clients in a wide range of commercial litigation/insurance defense disputes and lawsuits, by managing all aspects of a case from initial investigation through discovery, motions, trial, and appeals, including gathering evidence, legal research, drafting court documents, arguing in court, and negotiating settlements on behalf of clients.
Responsibilities- Manage a litigation caseload from beginning to end, by thoroughly reviewing case facts, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and conducting legal research to build a strong case strategy.
- Draft and file necessary legal documents such as complaints, answers, motions, briefs, and appeals.
- Conduct legal research, drafting pleadings, motions and appellate briefs.
- Conduct depositions, review and respond to discovery requests, and manage the exchange of information between parties.
- Represent clients in court hearings, including opening statements, witness examinations, closing arguments, and jury deliberations.
- Prepare and argue motions before the court on various legal issues.
- Develop trial strategy, prepare witnesses, and present evidence in court.
- Advise clients on legal options, potential risks, and case strategy throughout the litigation process.
- Seeking to resolve disputes through settlement negotiations with opposing counsel.
- Represent clients in appeals to higher courts if necessary.
- Collaborate closely with paralegals and support staff to ensure timely management of case files and deadlines.
- Working collaboratively with team members and partners to develop effective litigation strategies tailored to each client s unique situation to achieve successful outcomes.
- Communicating with clients and providing timely reporting on case status.
- Negotiating settlements for legal disputes.
- Complying with all legal standards and regulations.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Admission to the State Bar of South Carolina and in good standing.
- Prefer 3-5 years of experience. Transportation experience is a plus.
- Ability to evaluate complex legal issues, analyze evidence, and develop sound arguments.
- Effective oral and written communication to present arguments persuasively in court and to clients.
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in legal documents and case management.
- Ability to conduct thorough legal research and apply relevant case law to specific situations.
- Creatively identify legal strategies to address complex issues and overcome challenges.
- Ability to build rapport with clients, witnesses, and opposing counsel.
