MUSCP - Advanced Practice Provider (APP – NP/PA) – Cardiothoracic Surgery
We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider to work full‑time in the pre‑ and post‑operative care of cardiac patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Job Summary and PurposeThe APP will join a busy division that includes 6 cardiac surgeons, 4 thoracic surgeons, 10 residents and 15 APPs, performing CABG, valve replacement, robotic heart surgery, left ventricular assist device placement, heart and lung transplant, lobectomy, esophagectomy and more.
Work Schedule and Hours- 40 hours per week.
- 12.5‑hour rotating inpatient shifts (night and weekend availability required).
- 8‑hour outpatient shifts.
- Rotating schedule of inpatient and outpatient roles.
- Inpatient and outpatient cardiac patients.
- 18 years to death.
- Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
- OR completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN (AGPNP/ANP, AGANP, FNP).
- Physician Assistant.
- Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP/ACNP).
- At least one year of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider (PA or NP) preferred; not required.
The APP will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to that physician and to the Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Required Licensure, Certifications & Registrations- Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- DHEC and DEA license applications started prior to the first day.
- Alternating role in the inpatient step‑down unit and outpatient clinic; possible travel to outreach clinics.
- Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examination.
- Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical exam, radiology, laboratory and other diagnostic results pursuant to scope of practice.
- Performs therapeutic procedures such as chest tube placement/removal, bedside chemical pleurodesis, arterial line placement, ultrasound‑guided IV placement, wound VAC placement, simple suture, etc.
- Initiates referrals, consults with attending or collaborating physicians.
- Documents and bills for direct care provided.
- Utilizes current research and evidence‑based decision‑making in all clinical practice.
- Participates in quality/performance improvement activities, clinical research, accreditation, compliance and regulatory activities.
- Demonstrates professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
- May precept students and facilitate learning for new team members.
Continuous standing, walking and sitting; ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, use both hands and legs, perform repetitive motions, lift up to 50 lbs unassisted. Must be physically qualified for respirator use. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected and work in a latex‑safe environment.
