9:30 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., includes rotating weekends and holidays

Primary Function

Performs routine and special diagnostic procedures requiring technical skill, judgment, and independent decision‑making following established standards, policies and procedures. Performs phlebotomy and accessioning duties as needed. Assists the Laboratory Supervisor with technical and administrative functions of the laboratory.

Essential Job Functions
  • Technical Procedures:
    Responsible for testing procedures, quality control, proficiency testing to ensure that the test results meet the laboratory’s definition of quality—accurate, timely, appropriate, and useful. Verifies specimen integrity, sets priorities, evaluates and interprets data, documents results, assists in evaluating and implementing new methods, and maintains policy and procedure manuals.
  • Instrumentation:
    Operates lab instruments, performs instrument QC, documents results, troubleshoots instrument problems, maintains preventive maintenance, and understands instrument theory.
  • Information Handling:
    Uses Cerner/STAR in accordance with policy for ordering, receiving, canceling tests; reviews and verifies results; follows up on pending lists; documents all actions for quality monitoring.
  • Communication/Customer Service:
    Communicates accurately, timely, clearly, and professionally with supervisors, pathologists, coworkers, and other departments. Answers laboratory phones, directs parties, and maintains good rapport with peers and clinical staff.
  • Compliance/Safety:
    Follows laboratory and hospital policies, informs supervisors of safety issues, maintains a safe work environment, completes mandatory education, and participates in continuing education and performance improvement goals.
Licensing/Certification
  • Registered as a MT, MLS, or IMLS with ASCP, ASCPI, NCA, or AMT.
Education
  • B.S. in Medical Technology or Bachelors degree with prerequisite coursework and clinical training (required).
  • Alternatively, meet the alternate route requirements for education and training as specified by ASCP, NCA, or AMT to be certified.

Working Conditions
  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping; may lift or move up to 50 lbs; requires finger/hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination.
  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue; possible exposure to communicable diseases, infection materials, toxic substances, biohazardous materials.
  • Potential weekend or holiday work, and call duties as needed.
Skill
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation and perform patient phlebotomy under stress and time constraints.
  • Demonstrate superior work knowledge, organization, and clear communication.
  • Use office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, and computer terminals.
