Overview

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

Patient Care Technician I:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Patient Care Technician II:
High school diploma/GED and ONE of the following requirements must be met.

• Associate or Bachelor's degree
• At least 1 year work experience in a .6 FTE PCT I position at MUSC CHS
• 1 year of experience in a healthcare facility
• Active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution
• Active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution
• Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution

Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Ability to perform job functions while standing (Continuous); sitting (Continuous); walking (Continuous); climb stairs (Infrequent); indoors/outdoors (Continuous/Infrequent); work from elevated areas (Frequent); in confined/cramped spaces (Frequent); kneeling positions (Infrequent); bend at the waist (Continuous); twist at the waist (Frequent); squat and perform job functions (Frequent); pinching operations (Frequent); gross motor and fine manipulation (Continuous); reach overhead (Frequent); repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders (Continuous);

fully use both legs (Continuous); balance and coordination with lower extremities (Frequent); reach in all directions (Continuous); lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted (Infrequent); lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted (Infrequent); lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. (Infrequent); exert up to 50 lbs. of force (Frequent). Examples: transferring a 100 lb. patient requires 50 lbs.

of force; for every 100 additional pounds, assistance is required from another healthcare worker; 20 lbs. to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet; 25 lbs. to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Visual and auditory requirements include maintaining 20/40 vision, distance/near recognition, color discrimination, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing acuity, and the ability to perform gross and fine motor functions;

ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required; latex-safe environment; tactile sensitivity; and other listed positional requirements. Selected positions may require maintaining good olfactory sensory function and qualification for respirator use, initially and as required.
