The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.
Minimum Training And EducationPatient Care Technician I:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Patient Care Technician II:
High school diploma/GED and ONE of the following requirements must be met.
- Associate or Bachelor's degree
- At least 1 year work experience in a .6 FTE PCT I position at MUSC CHS
- 1 year of experience in a healthcare facility
- Active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution
- Active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution
- Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution
Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

To transfer a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force;
For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker; 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet; 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Vision and hearing requirements include: 20/40 vision, color discrimination, depth perception, peripheral vision, and corrected hearing.
