MUSCP - Advanced Practice Provider (APP - NP/PA) – Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences: D-Pod Clinic (Night Shift Only)

Full‑time NP/PA working with the psychiatry team embedded in the Emergency Department to provide psychiatric consults and management of psychiatric patients who present to the MUSC ED, under the supervision of a psychiatrist. Will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work with a team of ED based psychiatrists as part of the Mental Health ICCE, within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

  • Work shift:

    7 AM to 5 PM, 1 PM to 11 PM, 10 PM to 8 AM. 14 shifts per month required for full‑time positions. Additional 10‑hour shifts built into the schedule per year, one per quarter.

Job Purpose

Full‑time NP/PA working with the psychiatry team embedded in the Emergency Department to provide psychiatric consults and management of psychiatric patients who present to the MUSC ED, under the supervision of a psychiatrist. Will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work with a team of ED based psychiatrists as part of the Mental Health ICCE, within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

Required Minimum Training and Education
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
Preferred Training
  • Physician Assistant.
  • APRN – PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health NP) (All ages). (Must check educational background for appropriate population focus.)
Preferred Experience

Minimum of one year of mental health provider experience as an APRN or PA.

Degree of Supervision

Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

Currently licensed (or eligible) in South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as a PMHNP with the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Requires Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. BLS must be current; if not, provider must enroll and obtain certificate by start date. DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.

Job Duties
  • Perform comprehensive mental health evaluations to determine the appropriate level of care.
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations.
  • Evaluates and treats patients based on history, mental status examination, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results per practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency approved by the Clinical Division Chief.
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers and/or consults with the attending physician or collaborating physician when appropriate.
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence‑based decision‑making in all clinical practice.
  • Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research when appropriate.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept trainees at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider trainee and facilitates learning of new team members.
  • Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs as required by policies and state law.
