Position: UNIV - Research Specialist I - Department of Biochemistry

Job Description Summary

The department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at MUSC has an opening for a motivated and collegial Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Noel Warfel. The lab focuses on understanding how hypoxia alters cancer cell migration and resistance to therapy. The lab is also invested in drug development and testing in prostate cancer and other solid tumors.

Job Purpose

To conduct laboratory research with involving basic biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as maintaining lab reagent and supply inventories.

  • Preferred Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences or a related field and laboratory research experience.
Preferred Additional Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences or related majors. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in cancer biology.

Guideline And Supervision

Must be able to work with little or no supervision.

MUSC Minimum Training And Experience Requirements

A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.

Job Duties
  • Performs mammalian tissue culture (30%)
    • Grows, maintains, expands, and treats mammalian cell lines
    • Develops, evaluates and implements new or modified culture procedures
    • Improves laboratory methods of primary tissue culture
  • Laboratory research (35%)
    • Lead a research project with the support of PI and lab staff
    • Prepares daily records of experimental procedures and results
    • Assist with manuscript preparation
  • Lab management (35%)
    • Prepare lab reagents
    • Regular inventory of lab supplies
    • Orders and receives laboratory supplies

Job Description

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform job functions in an upright position, seated position, while walking/mobile, climb, use step stool, work in temperature extremes, work in confined/cramped spaces, bend at, twist at the waist, fully use both hands/arms, perform repetitive motions, fully use both legs, reach in all directions, maintain olfactory function, lift materials up to 20 lbs, lift 4 liter waste material bottles, lift 25-30 lbs jugs of liquid, lift file boxes, push/lift 40 lbs centrifuge rotors, lift 25 lbs boxes, push/pull file boxes, maneuver heavy equipment, perform gross motor functions with fine motor movements, maintain vision, discriminate colors, hear alarms, understand conversation, work in a darkroom, be qualified for respirator use, work rotating shifts, work overtime, learn and use new processes, tools and equipment.
