Job Description Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.
Minimum Training and Education- Patient Care Technician I:
High School Diploma or equivalent required. - Patient Care Technician II:
High school diploma/GED and one of the following requirements must be met:
- Associate or Bachelor's degree
- At least 1 year work experience in a .6 FTE PCT I position at MUSC CHS
- 1 year of experience in a healthcare facility
- Active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution
- Active enrollment in a healthcare related field from an accredited institution
- Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution
Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical RequirementsAbility to perform job functions while standing (Continuous), while sitting (Continuous), while walking (Continuous), climb stairs (Infrequent), work indoors (Continuous), outside in temperature extremes (Infrequent), from elevated areas (Frequent), in confined/cramped spaces (Frequent), from kneeling positions (Infrequent), bend at the waist (Continuous), twist at the waist (Frequent), squat (Frequent), perform 'pinching' operations (Frequent), gross motor activities with fingers and hands (Continuous), firm grasping (Continuous), fine manipulation (Continuous), reach overhead (Frequent), repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders (Continuous), fully use both legs (Continuous), use lower extremities for balance (Frequent), reach in all directions (Continuous), lift and carry 50 lbs unassisted (Infrequent), lift/lower objects 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted (Infrequent), lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs (Infrequent), exert up to 50 lbs of force (Frequent).
Examples include: transferring a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist requires 50 lbs of force, each additional 100 lbs requires assistance from another healthcare worker, 20 lbs of force needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet, 25 lbs of force required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or both;
see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance; match or discriminate between colors; determine distance/relationship between objects; good peripheral vision; sustain hearing acuity with correction; perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements; deal effectively with stressful situations; work rotating shifts (Frequent); work overtime as required (Frequent); work in latex-safe environment (Continuous); maintain tactile sensory functions (Continuous);
ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function (Continuous) for selected positions; qualify physically for respirator use, initially and as required (Continuous) for selected positions.
