Overview

Job Description Summary Dispatcher for MUSC Department of Public Safety, operates base radio station, answers telephones, directs calls, and dispatches officers to calls on campus. Maintains radio communications with officers and MUHA Safety and Security.

• Operates the base radio station for Public Safety, Hosp. Authority radio systems and dispatches and directs officers promptly to emergency and other locations.
• Maintain a dispatch log (computerized or written) of all activities for dispatched or received calls and for all events.
• Answer all non-emergency and emergency telephone lines, obtain and record pertinent information regarding the nature and urgency of the situation, determine appropriate response, and expeditiously alert responding units via radio or telephone; dispatch officer for assistance and/or investigations.
• Operate the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) teletype to obtain information on vehicle registration, securities, boats, guns, articles, missing persons, unidentified persons, Highway Department Information, Crime History checks on suspects, FAA Aircraft tracing, State/Wants/Warrants file; monitor messages on teletype; obtain information as needed; adhere to 10-minute hit policies as required.
• Send messages on teletype when needed.
• Utilize machinery and equipment in the performance of daily tasks.
• Mentor all Communications Specialists assigned to the Field Training Program and coordinate their training.

• Minimum Requirements:
  
  A high school diploma and two years of entry-level work experience with voice communications systems or central switchboard operations; an associate degree in a technical communications discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
• Physical Requirements:
  
  Continuous - 6-8 hours per shift;
  Frequent - 2-6 hours per shift;
  Infrequent - 0-2 hours per shift. Ability to perform job functions in various positions (upright, seated, walking/mobile) and environments (indoors, dusty areas).
• Computer literacy is required.
