Job Description Summary

The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine (COM) is seeking an Associate Dean for Student Affairs to provide strategic leadership and oversight for programs that support students and provide services that enhance students’ educational experience within the medical school. This role is dedicated to promoting the academic success, personal well‑being, and professional growth of medical students. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs plays a key role in fostering a supportive learning environment.

As a member of the senior education leadership team, they are responsible for oversight of academic advising, the medical student wellness and financial literacy programs, COM student organizations and events, the learning environment, and collaboration with university services including student health, counseling and psychological services, and accommodations at the Charleston and AnMed campuses. This role reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and requires a minimum of approximately 80% effort;

allocation of remaining effort will be determined based on the selected candidate’s clinical and/or academic interests and the needs of the home academic department. Faculty rank and home academic department will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

Job Description Student Support, Academic Advising and Counseling, Personal Counseling and Student Wellness

Oversee a coordinated, proactive and effective program for individualized academic and personal counseling. Support students experiencing academic difficulty and personal challenges. Promote student resilience, wellness, and professional identity formation through wellness programming. Collaborate with curriculum leaders and university learning specialists to integrate student support into the academic environment; co‑lead the student success committee with curriculum leaders. Support students seeking accommodations from the university.

Monitor student progress and professionalism and maintain academic records.

Program Leadership and Administration

Lead and manage the Office of Student Affairs, including supervision of staff and oversight of the budget. Participate in development of school policies. Oversee compliance with and implement procedures for LCME accreditation standards related to student affairs, the learning environment, and technical standards at the Charleston and AnMed campuses in collaboration with the campus dean. Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures in higher education.

Oversee COM student organizations and student events including orientations, white coat ceremony, match day celebration, and oath ceremony. Collaborate with the COM career advising team.

Institutional Collaboration and Representation

Serve on key committees of the medical school and university. Represent the medical school in national organizations and conferences related to student affairs. Collaborate with university‑wide student services, including student health, counseling and psychological services, student financial aid, student financial literacy, and university accommodations services.

Qualifications
  • MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent terminal degree; board certification preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in medical education, student affairs and academic leadership preferred. Demonstrated experience with programs that support medical student development.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
