Job Description Summary
The Dr. Charles P. Darby Jr. Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston is seeking a full‑time pediatric cardiologist to serve as Medical Director of the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory. The candidate will have expertise in advanced noninvasive cardiac imaging, including cardiac MRI, and will lead initiatives to advance cardiac imaging, mentor fellows and faculty, and support education and training of pediatric cardiology fellows.

The ideal candidate will be board certified or board eligible in pediatric cardiology, possess additional training in advanced non‑invasive cardiac imaging, and have a minimum of five years of post‑training experience. Primary clinical responsibilities include serving as a noninvasive imaging cardiologist focused on transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and cardiac MRI, with opportunities to perform and interpret transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), fetal echocardiography, and cardiac CT based on experience and interest.
As Medical Director, the successful candidate will provide comprehensive oversight and strategic leadership for the Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory, ensuring quality assurance, protocol development, program growth, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Additional clinical and academic opportunities are available and may be tailored to the candidate’s individual interests. The role also includes active participation in the education of pediatric cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students, with encouragement and support to pursue individual scholarly and academic interests.
Physical RequirementsAbility to perform job functions in an upright position, in a seated position, while walking/mobile, work indoors and outdoors in all weather, work in confined spaces, lift and carry 15 lbs., maintain vision and hearing acuity, perform gross motor functions, and fulfill other physical tasks as typical for the position.
Location and Hospital HighlightsMUSC is consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals nationally and the Heart Center is ranked fourth nationally. The cardiac program is the only surgical and interventional center in South Carolina, with comprehensive care from newborns to adults. Annually, more than 14,000 echocardiograms, 600 cardiac catheterizations, and 450 cardiac operations are performed. MUSC is one of the few programs in the country to receive a three‑star ranking from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
