The Blue Sky Labs Coordinator is responsible for effective, cost‑efficient, and timely coordination of the Blue Sky Labs facilities and administrative functions. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Projects in the Office of Innovation, the Coordinator will oversee the shared facilities, respond to tenant service needs, and facilitate the leasing process. This position requires an individual with basic laboratory knowledge and strong administrative capabilities.
Blue Sky Labs is a ~3,000‑square‑foot wet laboratory incubator operated by MUSC to help launch successful life‑science startups. It is co‑located on‑campus with shared community meeting spaces in Blue Sky Landing, as well as with MUSC’s Office of Innovation, Zucker Institute for Innovation Commercialization, and other MUSC departments.
Responsibilities Laboratory Management- Manages the daily operations of the Blue Sky Labs incubator facilities, including coordinating maintenance and equipment calibration, and installation of new shared equipment.
- Sets up new laboratories for startup companies in the incubator.
- Orders and manages the inventory of common, shared supplies.
- Identifies and negotiates vendor contracts for shared supplies and equipment.
- Partners with MUSC’s laboratory management teams to ensure overall compliance with safety policies and research waste procedures.
- Establishes and maintains lab standard operating procedures/protocols for all shared equipment and instrumentation.
- Provides training for companies on using shared equipment in labs, including procedures and protocols. Demonstrates safety operations to users.
- Collaborates with MUSC Real Estate to manage lease agreements, ensuring timely execution, compliance with terms, and proper documentation.
- Coordinates letters of support for current and potential lease holders in conjunction with their grant applications.
- Works with Facilities and Real Estate teams to coordinate billing for tenant improvements, ensuring accurate invoices and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Manages transitions and exits of companies and employees from the facility, including decommissioning labs and preparing suites for new tenants.
- Onboards new tenants with their facility needs, including lab setup and signage.
- Maintains fixed asset inventory annually, accounting for all Blue Sky Labs‑owned equipment.
- Coordinates with MUSC Information Solutions to establish networking, computing, server, Wi‑Fi, printing, and other IT needs for small businesses.
- Coordinates with MUSC facilities on janitorial and maintenance needs.
- Assists the Office of Innovation with facility‑related requests, including interactions with contractors, vendors, and package deliveries.
- Organizes quarterly events with new tenants to share incubator protocols and entrepreneurial resources.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree and two years of work experience in a laboratory or closely related setting, OR a total of five years of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working in higher education in a laboratory setting or center of research.
- Experience working with small businesses, technology startup companies, or scientific business operations.
Education:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent.
Work Experience:
2-4 years.
