Position: Life Safety Lead Technician

Position Summary

Be a Tar Heel! The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is hiring an Electronics Specialist – Advanced, also known as the Life Safety Lead Technician, to lead the Life Safety Shop within Building Services. A sign‑on bonus of $6,283 (paid in two installments within 12 months of hire) is available for the successful applicant.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor Life Safety Shop technicians, providing technical support, training, and orientation.
  • Review, approve, and submit Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) system programming changes, performing downloads and maintaining documentation.
  • Conduct major installations and modifications of life safety systems—including fire detection and suppression, card access, security, CCTV, and equipment monitoring systems.
  • Perform inspections (walk‑through, pre‑final, final, and commission) and initiate punch‑lists, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and repairs meet manufacturer specifications, NFPA, and International Fire Code requirements.
  • Maintain required licenses and certifications, and keep all system‑manufacturer certifications current.
  • Utilize laptop computers for diagnostics, troubleshooting, and system programming; configure peripheral printers and generate sensitivity reports.
  • Serve as a mandatory employee, available for essential operations during adverse weather or emergencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in electronics or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience
  • In‑depth knowledge of electronic technology theory and practical troubleshooting from system to component level.
  • Proficient in various computer operating systems and maintenance programs for micro‑processor–based systems.
  • Strong familiarity with NFPA, NEC, NCBC, NCSCO, IFC, and ADA codes for installations and upgrades.
  • Experience with the Fire Alarm industry: programming, service, and repair of sprinkler, standpipe, fire pumps, chemical suppression, security, CCTV, and card access systems.
  • Ability to recommend system software/hardware, train end users, and ensure optimal system functionality.
  • Experience in planning and managing workflow, including workload schedules, preventive maintenance, emergencies, and backlog.
  • Valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Fire Sprinkler Inspection Technician License (NC State Board of Examiners).
  • Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician License (NC State Board of Examiners).
  • NICET Level II certification in Inspection and Testing of Water‑Based Systems.
  • NICET Level II certification in Fire Alarm Systems.
  • For applicants without full NICET Level II certifications, a conditional commitment to obtain the required licenses and certifications within three to four years of employment.
Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience
  • Progressive experience in the Fire Alarm industry with factory certification from at least two major manufacturers.
  • Review of building design phases for life safety systems.
  • Operational testing, inspections, and commissioning of life safety access‑control systems.
  • Experience working with state agencies such as NCDOI, NCDOL, and NC SCO.
  • Strong ability to prioritize, schedule, assign, and manage workload, including preventive maintenance and emergency requests.
Physical and Schedule Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces; lift weights up to 40 lbs.
  • Work schedule:

    Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., with occasional evening, night, weekend, on‑call, and overtime work.
