Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 400 campus buildings with approximately 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, and Life Safety Services.
Housing Support is an effective team of employees providing maintenance and repair services, including a safe and secure environment for the 9000 students living in 37 residence halls and 700 apartments. Trade skills include cabinetmaking, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, electronics, sheet metal, roofing, painting and HVAC. We identify, estimate, plan and complete minor facility renovation projects via our own Housing Support internal shops, Facilities Services Construction Shops, and/or private contractors.
We provide year-round, 24-hour customer service to our resident students and Housing staff. Housing Support also conducts all scheduled facility maintenance inspections within its facilities. This unit is the primary point of contact for the residence halls and dispatches the request to the appropriate shop.
This recruitment is for two (2) Facility Maint Tech – Mech Trade – Journey positions & ). By applying, you will be considered for both positions. Performs plumbing repairs, installation, and preventive maintenance per applicable codes and standards. Informs the supervisor and/or lead mechanic of any problems and provides updates on the status of work in progress. Assists with area coverage to ensure that work orders, maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance (PM) requests are completed.
As this position works in areas occupied by students, particular care must be taken to address residents’ needs, while ensuring residents’ privacy and respect for their personal property.
