Clinical Support Technician I (Nursing Assistant I + Clerical) – needed for GI Surgery Acute Care Unit - 6 Memorial. 6 Memorial is a 28‑bed, acute care, inpatient nursing unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Our interdisciplinary team provides evidence‑based and high‑quality care primarily to adult post‑surgical patients with weight loss issues, gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, and complex non‑cancer GI‑related illnesses.

Our surgical oncology physician leaders are under the Surgical Oncology Division, affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. These leaders are nationally renowned for their expertise in improving colorectal, GI, and endocrine malignancy through clinical excellence, medical education, and research. Likewise, our GI physicians are known for enhancing patient care for upper and lower GI patients, and we are recognized nationally as a Bariatric Center for Excellence.

Our nursing team members can expect to work within the full scope of their practice in a multi‑disciplinary setting.

Patient populations require close post‑operative observation, occasional remote cardiac telemetry, early aggressive mobilization, pulmonary hygiene, extensive physical therapies, IV, central line/PICC line care, administration of TPN, anticoagulation, oxygen therapy, pain management, blood product administration, intake/output and ostomy care. Additionally, multiple tube/drain care includes chest tubes, Foley catheters, NG tubes, G‑tubes, J‑tubes, J/P drains, and rectal tubes. Extensive complex wound management and multimodal nutritional support are provided throughout hospitalization.

This is a 36‑hour per week position; working rotating shifts (days/nights) 7am – 7:30pm and 7pm – 7:30am, with weekend and holiday rotation. The position qualifies for an extensive benefit package, including PTO hours accrued based on worked hours.

Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of the patient care unit desk area functions.

• Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
• Critically reviews patient care documentation, noting any significant changes in the patient's condition and reporting immediately to a registered nurse or physician.
• Provides a variety of clerical tasks including organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provides administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
• Provides clinical support assistance such as cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
• Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in the plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measures and records vital signs, height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
• Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and documents patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.
