Summer Youth Build Skills

Overview

The Town of Chapel Hill's Summer Youth Employment Program is open to all Chapel Hill youth who meet HUD income guidelines. The program is sponsored by a Community Development Block Grant.

• Age: 14-18 years old
• Current resident of Chapel Hill (residents of Carrboro may be considered)
• Families must meet HUD income guidelines (earn < 80% of the median income for your household size)
• Must not earn more than 80% of the HUD Area Median Income for your household size
• Applicants must submit family income information with their application (confidential; form available at HUDINCOMEVERIFICATION)

• Work 6‑7 weeks during the summer, about 20 hours per week (maximum 120 hours)
• General work hours 8:30‑5:00 Monday‑Friday
• Wage: $12.00‑$13.00 per hour
• Positions across various town departments and area nonprofits; each position may have slightly different responsibilities
• Multiple positions available
• Selected candidates remain in the assignment for the duration of employment
• Applicants must pass pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening, fingerprinting and background check
• Program provides workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills, and interview conduct

• Good oral and written communication
• Good customer service skills
• Can follow instructions with minimal supervision
• Can work with a diverse group of people
