Position Overview
Department: University Development Office
Title: Director of Development for Principal Gift Operations
Location: North Carolina, US
Type: Full‑time, Permanent Staff
FTE: 1 (40 hrs/week)
Position SummaryStrategic and operational leadership for the Principal Gifts Program overseeing high‑stakes donor engagement, stewardship, and experience.
Hybrid work arrangement possible; residence within reasonable commuting distance required.
Responsibilities- Lead donor hospitality, campus visits, and principal gift stewardship for donors capable of gifts $5 million or more.
- Operate the concierge‑level donor experience, ensuring timely fulfillment of recognition commitments.
- Supervise the development of executive‑ready briefings, dashboards, and data tools in partnership with Business Intelligence.
- Coordinate proposal development and implement strategic data dashboards across gift, event, and executive offices.
- Build and scale a team, beginning with one full‑time and one temporary staff member, to support long‑term strategic vision.
Minimum bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent). One year of professional‑level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience required for direct solicitation roles.
Required Qualifications , Competencies, and Experience- In‑depth understanding of fundraising principles and strategies.
- White‑glove service orientation: consistently deliver high‑touch, anticipatory support to donors and senior leaders.
- Operational excellence: commitment to superior execution with systems and habits that prevent errors and elevate presentation quality.
- Process improvement skills around program and workflow enhancements.
- Executive presence: confidence and discretion when engaging highly‑net‑worth individuals and senior leaders.
- Attention to detail and precision in managing complex pipelines, events, and communications.
- Seven or more years of fundraising experience.
- Four or more years of fundraising experience in a research university or complex institution.
- Knowledge of principal gifts practices and procedures.
- Superior communications and language command with diplomacy and nuance.
- Command of executive‑level writing and speaking with diplomacy and nuance.
- Comfort leading through influence rather than formal authority, guiding individuals who may hold more senior titles or report outside the direct line of supervision.
