SummaryAn Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) intensivist is a member of the UNC critical care team. Their primary responsibility is to provide continuous and comprehensive care for acutely ill and critically ill patients in an intensive care setting. This position reports to the Medical Director(s) of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
The APP intensivist has specialized skills and knowledge related to the acute and critical care settings in which s/he practices. He/she will perform physical exams, collect/document data, conduct approved diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, order/schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribe appropriate interventions/medications, and provide direct patient care services. He/she is expected to collaborate with all members of the care team to deliver efficient, safe, high quality care to patients in accordance with UNC Policies and Procedures.
This position may also serve as a resource to acute-care floor and step-down units if special needs or medical emergencies arise in those clinical areas.
- Clinical — Obtains relevant health and medical history, performs thorough physical assessment, reviews and interprets pertinent diagnostic tests/results, develops differential diagnoses, and implements treatment plans including prescribing/ordering evidence-based pharmacological agents. Maintains clear, comprehensive records and ensures appropriate follow-up management. Participates in preventive health screening and maintains knowledge of general disease processes and specialty literature. Prioritizes work and assists staff to provide prompt and efficient patient flow.
Leads or participates in projects to improve productivity. Performs medical procedures in accordance with departmental guidelines and privileging. - Education — Educates patients/families regarding medical condition, treatment, and follow-up. Collaborates with clinicians, staff, and students to promote continuity and patient/family-centered care. Develops educational materials and provides education to physicians, house staff, nursing, ancillaries and/or students. Supports self-learning and attends education programs as needed.
- Leadership — Provides instruction to clinicians and students, participates in community or network outreach programs, and leads or participates in systems improvements to optimize health care delivery.
- Professionalism — Interacts with patients and families respectfully and timely, collaborates with coworkers, and accepts responsibility for outcomes and workload management.
- Quality/Research — Engages in daily continuous quality improvement, leads interdisciplinary teams, updates protocols to reflect evidence-based changes, and contributes to policy development and new clinical programs.
Education Requirements:
Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department.
Management strongly prefers that NP candidates be board certified in acute care (ACNP-C or ACNPC-AG).
Professional Experience Requirements:
No prior experience required. Management strongly prefers for NPs and PAs with prior critical care experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, strong written and verbal communication and analytical skills, and accurate documentation for billing.
