The ASC is a free-standing surgical facility that provides surgical care to pediatric and adult patients and supports Orthopedics (Sports), ENT/OHN, plastics, general laparoscopic, general oncology, peds urology, urology, and dental services. The ability to scrub is preferred but not required;

proficiency in Sports Medicine Surgery is preferred.

The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, four 10-hour shifts per week. No weekends, no on-call, no holidays.

The text that follows describes the role of the Surgical Technologist II and the responsibilities that support safe, efficient, and high-quality operative care.

• Performs all duties of Level I plus additional responsibilities in operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices according to accepted standards.
• Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes specialty instrumentation.
• Follows aseptic technique; identifies contamination or breaks in technique and implements corrective actions.
• Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies; follows policies for counts.
• Establishes and maintains sterile field; labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.
• Assists in preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
• Assists in planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and drapes for optimal access during procedures.
• Assists the surgeon with understanding patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the procedure.
• Demonstrates case preparation and assists in instrument planning; corrects deficiencies at the case level.
• Adapts scrubbing procedures based on information to support patient care; responds to emergencies per hospital plans.
• Inventory, receive, and store supplies under Surgical Services leadership.
• Mentors new hires and peers, participates in orientation and annual reviews.
• Identifies and reports defective instruments or equipment; assists with restocking.
• Assists the RN during intraoperative nursing activities.
• Participates in data collection for research under the direction of an RN.
• Operates complex operating room equipment and troubleshoots as needed.

• Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED; graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 5+ years of prior surgical tech experience.
• Licensure/Certification Requirements: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers;
  Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) certification.
• Professional Experience Requirements: 3+ years.
• Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Successful completion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies; strong communication and customer service; excellent organizational skills; ability to mentor and be a team player; on-call may be required depending on position.
