Position SummaryThe UNC Police Officer position protects and serves the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices.
- Police Officer I:
Entry‑level with 0‑2 years of experience, completion of North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and certification as a Law Enforcement Officer within one year of employment. - Police Officer II:
Fully functioning officers with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law‑enforcement officer, with at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). - Police Officer III:
Veteran officers with four or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law‑enforcement officer, with an Intermediate Certification from the NC CJETSC.
Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Lateral hires who are already certified NC law‑enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head.
Out‑of‑State lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.
Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; pass an in‑depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical. Must successfully complete a three‑week department orientation course and a twelve‑week department field training program during probationary period;
must satisfactorily complete the state mandated probationary period. The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
