The Energy Services Department consists of five groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generates electricity and steam, and the distribution of steam throughout campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff);
and (5) Administration (provides GIS, SCADA, coordination of operational information technologies, strategic planning, and management functions). Together these five groups provide safe, reliable, environmentally responsible, and cost‑effective steam, electricity, chilled water, sanitary sewer, reclaimed water, and potable water utility services to the University’s campus in a manner that moves UNC closer to the goals of Three Zeros Environmental Initiative.
The Energy Services – Stormwater group provides engineering and mapping for the University’s stormwater infrastructure, including drainage conveyance and stormwater control measures. The selected candidate will work directly with water resources engineers. The position will be full time for 12 to 14 weeks during the summer. There may be a possibility to continue part‑time during the school year. Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Reviewing construction documents and design reports to obtain information about stormwater structures.
- Performing mathematical computations using geometric and trigonometric functions (e.g. calculations related to volume, surface area, and elevation).
- Entering engineering data into a spreadsheet or database.
- Collecting field data related to stormwater structures.
- Scanning and cataloging design reports and construction drawings.
- Updating GIS data.
- Completing a preliminary design of stormwater infrastructure.
High school diploma or equivalency with coursework in mathematics and one year of experience relating to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Management PreferencesMinimum one year of experience related to engineering, construction, or office support; or one year of college‑level coursework related to civil and environmental engineering, environmental science or related field. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience or coursework related to GIS, mapping, CAD, and/or construction drawings. Demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude for acquiring new skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork and time‑management skills.
SpecialPhysical/Mental Requirements
The environmental conditions range from air conditioned office building to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need for operational requirements. Position must be able to navigate uneven terrain. When required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments, safety equipment is provided. Position requires an ability to climb ladders/stairs, navigate uneven terrain, move 50+ lbs.
