The purpose of this position is to plan, analyze, review, and design work associated with the full spectrum of traffic engineering operations, including signs, pavement markings, street lighting, and traffic calming devices. The work is to aid and assist contractors in enhancing safety through their traffic control plans.
What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions)- Notifies and creates lane closure and sidewalk closure permits for contractors working in the area.
- Report street light outages; respond to requests for street lighting.
- Develops and maintains a notification list for lane/ road closures. This list will notify Public Safety, Transit, and any other Stakeholders impacted by traffic delays.
- Enters all permits on a GIS road closure map to provide information for Public Safety.
- Manages the Road Closing permit process for the Town. Review applications to ensure they meet the approval criteria. Once the review is complete, initiate the approval process and send it to the Director for final sign-off. Will manage when contractors can do work that impacts traffic. Requires coming in at night to monitor the project.
- Communicates frequently with the Town Manager’s office about traffic impacts.
- Completes all other duties as assigned.

What do you need to know to do this job effectively?Knowledge of:
- Traffic Control Safety and relevant State and Federal traffic management laws and regulations
- Awareness of emerging trends and principles in the traffic engineering field
- Applicable Traffic control management laws and regulations
- Applying Traffic Control Plan knowledge through review and creation of traffic control plans
- Basic Computer software programs, including Microsoft, and the ability to learn other technologies
- Mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry.
Ability to:
- Learn Town Policies and Procedures
- Operate a computer, calculator, and copier.
- Work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and inclement weather, as needed.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the community

An associate’s degree or equivalent in engineering, engineering technology, or related field.
ExperienceThree years of relevant engineering/ Traffic Control and Operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification
- Valid NC Driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire
