position summary

a sign-on bonus of $7,458 is available for the successful applicant of this position paid in 2 installments within 12 months of hire: $3,729 within 30 days of hire date & $3,729 12 months after hire date.

electronics specialist - advanced – permanent staff (shra) – full‑time – 40 hours per week – north carolina, us. Hours monday – friday 6:30am to 3:00pm. Adverse weather, emergency events, communicable diseases mandatory on site primary. Participation in on‑call rotation.

Location:

chapel hill, nc.

primary purpose of organizational unit: chilled water systems (cws) produces and distributes chilled water for approx. 155 buildings. Responsible for maintenance, commissioning, and upgrade of distributed control systems, instrumentation, and plant equipment.

responsibilities
  • maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and calibration of existing plant and chilled water bridge controls and instrumentation, large variable frequency drives and uninterruptable power supplies at chiller plants and campus buildings.
  • installation, calibration and commissioning of new and retrofit chiller plant and chilled water bridge instrumentation and final control elements.
  • configure and operate the district cooling systems to include system starts after major outages, problem diagnosis and solutions, trend analysis, graphics, alarms and reports for the scada system.
  • emergency duty position requiring work during adverse weather or other university or cws emergency.
minimum education and experience requirements

associate’s degree in electronics or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from accredited institutions.

required qualifications, competencies, and experience
  • experience troubleshooting, maintaining, installing large variable frequency drives and control systems in an industrial setting or district energy system.
  • progressive on‑the‑job training, self‑study and experience in a similar environment using similar control systems and tools.
  • extensive knowledge of wiring diagrams, process, and control diagrams as they relate to distributed control systems in chilled water plants.
  • working knowledge of continuous process control principles and practices.
  • working knowledge of test equipment such as digital meters, oscilloscopes, and calibrators.
  • in‑depth understanding of resolving problems with large pwm motor drives, harmonics, standing wave phenomena, electromagnetic and radio frequency interference, grounding, and transient mitigation.
  • proficiency in cad drawing programs and microsoft office.
  • ability to work on multiple projects under tight schedules.
  • excellent analytical ability, independent planning, decision making, and communication skills.
preferred qualifications, competencies, and experience
  • associate’s degree in industrial electronics, instrumentation, and process controls.
  • technical degree in computer programming, electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • related progressive on‑the‑job training, self‑study and experience with similar control systems.
required licenses/certifications

valid north carolina driver’s license.

work in a very noisy environment requiring hearing protection. Perform work in high places such as cooling towers. Handle high voltages and energized equipment. May be exposed to hazardous substances.
