Qualifications- NC Teaching License - 88083 Visually Impaired
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license
- Experience with technology, low vision devices
- Experience with providing instruction for students with disabilities. Sufficient data management skills
- Such alternatives to the above as the Board finds appropriate and acceptable
- Preferred Special Education Certification
- Preferred experience with braille instruction

Job GoalUnder general supervision, the Teacher of Visual Impaired performs a variety of professional, instructional, administrative, and leadership tasks to coordinate activities in the Department of Exceptional Children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System. The purpose is to work with schools to provide support in addressing instructional improvement to promote the availability of a free appropriate public education for all students with disabilities, including procedural compliance and educational accountability.
PerformanceResponsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide and coordinate specialized instruction for students with visual impairments and develop appropriate materials.
- Collaborate and communicate with district and school staff, administrators, teachers, service provider professionals, parents and community to support understanding and address the needs of students with visual impairments.
- Ensure implementation of federal, state, and local policies and procedures affecting students with disabilities at all assigned schools.
- Provide technical expertise as needed and assist with student assessments during initial evaluation and reevaluation.
- Support school-based teams with evaluations and assessment of individual needs.
- Possess knowledge to complete functional vision and learning assessments and interpret results as needed.
- Responsible for specialized instruction and services to meet the educational needs of students with visual impairment.
- Support IEP teams to establish goals and objectives; assist in design, programming, and implementation of an IEP.
- Promote the use of research-based practices.
- Establish a service delivery schedule aligned with student programming needs.
- Attend and participate in meetings at school and district levels and with related teams.
- Orient and mentor service providers and staff for supporting learning of students with visual impairments.
- Coordinate referrals and manage schedule and caseload to maximize collaboration for student learning.
- Assist school staff and parents with transitions between educational levels and programmatic levels as students move within the district.
- Maintain accurate records, including current registry of students with Visual Impairment and/or Deaf/Blind for local, state, and federal reporting; timely submission to NCDPI.
- Prepare sequential and meaningful instruction aligned to assessed needs, IEP goals, and coordination with collaborating teachers/service providers; document in weekly/monthly lesson plans as appropriate.
- Provide support to the classroom teacher in subjects requiring adaptation due to visual impairment.
- Provide materials and support for instruction enabling core curriculum participation for students receiving services on Extended Content Standards.
- Consult with assessment team to determine appropriate testing materials and modifications.
- Conduct functional vision/learning media assessments and produce written reports.
- Maintain a current reference library of professional materials and resources.
