Position Summary
The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a Physician Scientist for the Dr. Joseph Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center (Muenzer MPS Center). This full‑time, variable track or tenure‑track faculty position will focus on translational research (80% effort) and clinical genetics (20% effort). The candidate will serve as principal investigator for ongoing and new clinical studies in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and will contribute to teaching, scholarly activities, and grant application efforts.
Responsibilities- 80% effort dedicated to translational research at the Muenzer MPS Center, including leading clinical research studies and supporting clinical trials of enzyme replacement, gene therapy, and intrathecal drug delivery.
- 20% effort devoted to clinical genetic activities in the Division, involving evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with congenital abnormalities, connective tissue disorders, skeletal dysplasias, neurodegenerative disorders, and metabolic disorders.
- Participate in inpatient clinical call with the Pediatric Genetics/Metabolism team.
- Engage in teaching and scholarly activities with the department’s academic program.
- Apply for extramural funding to support research projects of personal and institutional interest.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice providers, research staff, and health professionals to improve outcomes for individuals with rare genetic disorders.
- MD, board certified or board eligible in Pediatrics and Clinical Genetics or Biochemical Genetics.
- Strong teaching skills and a commitment to faculty development.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Track record with longitudinal research projects.
- Exposure to MPS patients and experience in managing rare metabolic disorders.
- Interest in translational research and a history of securing extramural funding.
