Position Summary:

As part of our strategic plan toward a new, free-standing, 550-bed Children’s hospital, the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology, seeks an accomplished academic physician to serve as Section Chief of Pediatric Hepatology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This position is full-time, fixed term, variable track and/or tenure/tenure track. Rank will be determined at a level commensurate with the applicant’s experience and accomplishments.

The Section Chief will report to the Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology. The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized leader in pediatric hepatology with the vision and skills to build a world-class academic liver program. They will have a strong commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing the field of medicine. As part of the planned expansion, this position also comes with significant support from UNC Health in building a pediatric liver transplant team.

The Section Chief of Pediatric Hepatology will be responsible for:

  • Providing strategic direction and clinical leadership for the pediatric liver program
  • Overseeing clinical operations and quality improvement initiatives
  • Developing and expanding liver transplantation services
  • Advancing the research mission through clinical trials and translational studies
  • Fostering the educational mission by teaching medical students, residents, and fellows
  • Recruiting and mentoring faculty members
  • Collaborating with leadership across departments and disciplines
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

MD or DO with board certification in Pediatric Gastroenterology, additional fellowship training or extensive experience in Pediatric Hepatology.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:
  • Proven track record of academic accomplishments in clinical care, research, and education
  • Strong leadership and administrative skills
  • Experience in program building and faculty development
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
