Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Our Mission is to improve the health and well‑being of North Carolinians and others who we serve. Our North Star is to be an Academic and Community powerhouse with patients at the center of all we do in the field of Radiation Oncology.

Patient Care:
We promote health and provide superb clinical care while maintaining our strong tradition of reaching underserved populations and reducing health disparities across North Carolina and beyond. Our clinical team spans ten campuses across North Carolina with active investments in linear accelerators, cyber knife, brachytherapy, HDR, radiopharmaceuticals, and proton therapy (coming in 2028). UNC Radiation Oncology is a national leader in quality and safety.

Education:

We prepare tomorrow’s health‑care professionals and biomedical researchers from all backgrounds by facilitating learning with innovative and integrated curricula and team‑oriented interprofessional education to ensure a highly skilled workforce. Radiation Oncology’s educational opportunities include residency programs in radiation oncology and medical physics, certificate programs in radiation therapy and medical dosimetry, and graduate and postdoctoral training in physics, computer science, biomedical engineering, and cancer biology.

Our departmental educators enjoy national reputation for teaching excellence in training the next generation of our field.

Research:
We develop and support a rich array of outstanding health‑sciences research programs, centers and resources. We provide infrastructure and opportunities for collaboration among disciplines throughout and beyond our university to support outstanding research. We foster programs in the areas of basic, translational, mechanistic and population research.
