Data Scientist / Systems EngineerRole Overview: K is seeking an organized and proactive Data Scientist to support our U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Land Imaging (NLI) Program customer in Reston, VA. This critical role is part of the Requirements, Capabilities, and Analysis for Earth Observation (RCA-EO) contract, dedicated to gathering the needs of remote sensing scientists, modeling remote sensing capabilities, and producing comprehensive decision-support analyses.
These efforts directly inform the National Land Imaging Program’s strategic investments, particularly concerning the Landsat Mission.
- Take on a customer-facing role, fostering and maintaining robust relationships with clients and stakeholders, including federal agency representatives and scientific partners.
- Utilize experience in data analytics and data visualization to translate complex datasets and modeling results into actionable insights for program decisions.
- Apply critical thinking and creative solutioning to solve emerging challenges in Earth observation requirements and capability assessments.
- Lead and mentor cross-functional teams engaged in remote sensing science, capability modeling, and strategic analysis.
- Demonstrate experience/education in remote sensing technologies, including satellite systems, to contribute to mission planning and future investment strategies.
- Lead network analyses to identify and map stakeholder relationships and support collaborative scientific efforts.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, data analytics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in data analytics or related field.
- Proven leadership experience leading teams, preferably in government contracting or scientific programs.
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and diverse teams.
- Proficiency in advanced data analytics tools and data visualization platforms (Power
BI, Tableau, etc). - Active TS/SCI Clearance or ability to achieve a TS/SCI is required to qualify for this position.
- Master’s degree in engineering, data analytics, or a related field is preferred.
- Solid background in optical remote sensing, satellite modeling, or Earth observation science.
- Experience with network analysis and network software (e.g., Neo4j).
- Experience with R or other statistical software for data analysis and modeling.
- Certifications in data visualization software.
- Experience working with artificial intelligence or natural language processing systems.
This position operates out of the Washington, DC metropolitan area and offers the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement.
