Schedule / Shift: Wednesday – Sunday | 7:00 PM – 3:30 AM (EST) — Evening/Night Shift. Flexibility required for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime based on staffing needs.
Job Description: The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) supports the Specimen Processing Department by performing essential pre-analytical laboratory functions. This role requires a strong data entry background, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt quickly in a high-volume, production-driven environment. The SPT I plays a critical role in maintaining quality, compliance, and customer satisfaction, while working safely in a biohazard laboratory setting.
Key Responsibilities- Perform specimen processing functions including A-station, presort, pickup/delivery, imaging, centrifugation, and aliquoting
- Accurately enter data at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Learn and understand specimen types related to ordered laboratory tests
- Maintain compliance with test-ordering regulations that may change daily
- Meet departmental productivity, quality, and turnaround-time standards
- Work confidently and accurately in a biohazard environment
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities
Skills & Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong data entry and computer skills
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
- Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced production environment
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
- Medical background with clinical laboratory terminology
- Prior experience in a hospital or production laboratory environment
- Production-focused laboratory setting
- Biohazard exposure with required safety compliance
