The Deckhand participates in the general maintenance of an inland pushboat and barges, works with lines and hard rigging, and observes the transfer of products on the barges.

This position is for those with a minimum of 6 months experience working on an inland pushboat. Those with limited or no experience should apply for the Entry Level Inland Deckhand position.

• Inland Deckhands support the vessel master in the safe and efficient operation of Kirby’s boats and barges.
• Kirby employees must adhere to safety rules and follow instructions from managers and supervisors as required for employment with Kirby.

• Attach and remove line and cables to and from the vessel, barges, docks and locks.
• Handle lines 4 to 8 times during loading and discharging to adjust for the changing height of the barge relative to other barges, the dock and the vessel.
• Maintain the vessel by performing scheduled maintenance and housekeeping such as sweeping, washing, chipping rusted metal, priming and painting.
• Make minor repairs using tools such as hammers, fire axes, ratchets, hand winches, stripping pumps, needle guns and grinders.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the vessel master (e.g., cooking, cleaning, washing clothes).

• Basic computer skills knowledge required.
• 12 months of consecutive work experience preferred.
• 6 months minimum experience on an inland pushboat required.

• High School or GED required.

• Must be able to live and work in close quarters and be prepared to spend extended time away from family.
• Work schedule and hours determined by boat.
  
  Typical schedule:
  
  2 for 1 up to 30 days, with a 12‑hour shift including holidays.
• Must be able to work in inclement weather (outdoor, heat and cold).
• Must be willing and able to attend paid required training on or off scheduled work time.
• Must have reliable transportation and drive to/from company‑defined hub cities.

• $228+/day, plus benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).

• Valid TWIC card required prior to applying (apply here if needed).
• Valid driver’s license required.
• No DWI or DUI in the last three years.
• No more than two moving driving violations in the last three years.
• Must satisfy all United States Coast Guard physical requirements (CG‑719K) and 46 CFR Part 10.
• Must satisfy all U.S. Coast Guard Chemical Drug Testing Programs for Vessel Personnel, as required.
• Must pass company requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C Benzene.
• Valid state‑issued birth certificate required.
• Valid social security card required.
• Minimum age 18 years.
• No pending criminal charges or probation.
• Must pass the Standards of Criteria Skill Assessment (online).
• Must read and write English and understand written and verbal orders.
• Must not be color blind.

• Walk: must walk 2–3 miles per day.
• Step: step 2 ft vertical and 2 ft horizontal.
• Reach: extend arms fully in horizontal and vertical planes.
• Climb: climb a 90‑degree vertical ladder 25–30 ft, carrying weight while ascending.
• Grip/Hold/Pull: grip, hold and pull 50 lbs.
• Lift: lift 75 lbs.
• Lift & Carry: lift and carry 50 lbs for ~350 ft.
• Vision: color vision and eyesight sufficient to pass eye test; uncorrected vision 20/200, corrected to 20/40.
• Hearing: meet minimum standards, per U.S. Coast Guard requirements.
• Speech: verbally communicate English via handheld radios or other devices.
• Smell: detect potentially dangerous vapors.
• Pulmonary Functions: pass pulmonary function test with at least 75% score.
• General: enter and exit hatches/doorways quickly in case of emergency.
• Equipment: wear negative/positive pressure respirator, foul‑weather gear, personal flotation device, rubber gloves and boots.
• Firefighting/Spill Containment: use equipment as required.
